IT WAS more than two hours since he"d found Tyler. Kevin

sat on the edge of the uncomfortable hospital chair, as close

to his beautiful, unconscious angel as he could get. He held

Tyler"s limp hand between his, as if he could will healing into

the younger man"s body from his own.

“Please,” Kevin murmured every now and then. He

couldn"t remember ever being so scared. Five years… five

years he"d been with Tyler, five years he"d been the happiest,

luckiest man he could imagine. Now something had

happened to his boy, his angel. And ridiculous as it seemed

to him, he had a fairly good idea what was to blame.

Sure Tyler had a bad back already, sure it might have

been a manufacturing defect that caused those cables to

snap, and just about everybody knew Tyler was a little

accident prone at times. But for everything to happen as it

did, when it did… it was all just too much coincidence.

“"Appened?” murmured a croaky voice nearby.

“Baby? Thank fuck… Ty… talk to me, please. Just tell

me you"re okay.”

“Kev? Bloody headache…” was all Tyler could manage to

respond with, as he moved to curl toward the comforting

voice beside him.

Kevin reached for the call button with his free hand as

he carefully stroked Tyler"s forehead, avoiding the bruises

there. “You"ll be okay, angel. Just rest a little bit now,” Kevin

soothed.

Moments later, two nurses hurried in, soon followed by

a couple of doctors, and Kevin was asked to step outside.

After a short period that he spent nervously pacing, he was

reassured that his partner would be all right, and that he"d

be notified of any changes. Tyler was already asleep again by

then, and Kevin finally agreed to go home and sleep for a few

hours.

When he got home, he all but had to force himself to go

to sleep. Locking the bedroom door behind him and Teddy,

Kevin crawled into bed and lay awake for a while staring at

the empty place beside him before drifting into an uneasy

sleep. First thing in the morning, he told himself, he"d go to

that antiques shop and get some answers about that creepy

thing in their dining room. And if he didn"t like the answers

he got, he"d throw it into a deep river if he had to.
